L’Année du Maghreb succède, en 2004, à L’Annuaire de l’Afrique du Nord dont la première parution au CRNS Éditions remonte à 1962. Revue semestrielle, chaque numéro comporte un dossier de recherche thématique centré sur le Maghreb faisant écho à l’actualité et aux débats pluridisciplinaires qui traversent les sciences sociales. Ouverte à des contributions en français, anglais et arabe, L’Année du Maghreb vise à proposer une lecture toujours plus vaste sur la place du Maghreb dans le monde, mais également de la place du monde dans cette région.

In Stambeli, Richard C. Jankowsky presents a vivid ethnographic account of the healing trance music created by the descendants of sub-Saharan slaves brought to Tunisia during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Stambeli music calls upon an elaborate pantheon of sub-Saharan spirits and North African Muslim saints to heal humans through ritualized trance. Based on nearly two years of participation in the musical, ritual, and social worlds of Stambeli musicians, Jankowsky's study explores the way the music evokes the cross-cultural, migratory past of its originators and their encounters with the Arab-Islamic world in which they found themselves. Stambeli, Jankowsky avers, is thoroughly marked by a sense of othernessùthe healing spirits, the founding musicians, and the instruments mostly come from outside Tunisiaùwhich creates a unique space for profoundly meaningful interactions between sub-Saharan and North African people, beliefs, histories, and aesthetics. Part ethnography, part history of the complex relationship between Tunisia's Arab and sub-Saharan populations, Stambeli is accompanied by a compact disc of Jankowsky's original field recordings and will be welcomed by scholars and students of ethnomusicology, anthropology, African studies, and religion. --Book Jacket.

The book traces growing state intervention in the rural areas of Tunisia and Libya in the middle 1800s and the diverging development of the two countries during the period of European rule. State formation accelerated in Tunisia under the French with the result that, with independence, interest-based policy brokerage became the principal form of political organization. Op 17 december 2010 stak een Tunesische jongeman zichzelf uit protest tegen het regime in brand. Die daad had grote gevolgen. Hij groeide uit tot een nationale held en het Tunesische volk vond de moed in opstand te komen. President Ben Ali weigerde af te treden, waardoor het protest alleen maar groeide. De sociale media en de slechte economische omstandigheden wakkerden het vuur aan. De vlam sloeg over naar andere Arabische landen en de rest is geschiedenis.
